# Prompt engineering

> Craft effective prompts for video analysis. Learn techniques to improve output quality, relevance, and precision.

Use prompts to analyze video content and generate text outputs. Prompt engineering is the process of iteratively refining how you craft your instructions or questions to the model to improve the quality, relevance, and precision of the responses. Prompt engineering is important for enhancing the effectiveness of the model in various use cases, from content creation and summarization to question-answering, as shown below:

* **Improves accuracy**: Tailored prompts produce more precise outputs by clearly specifying the task.
* **Reduces ambiguity**: Well-designed prompts limit the model's scope for interpretation, ensuring relevant responses.
* **Enhances efficiency**: Effective prompts reduce the need for post-processing, saving time and resources.
* **Customizes outputs**: Through prompt engineering, you can tailor the outputs to specific tones, styles, or formats, meeting diverse requirements.
* **Provides context**: Prompts can provide essential context to the model, ensuring the output is relevant and appropriate for the given situation or domain.

# Steps in prompt engineering

The typical steps involved in prompt engineering are as follows:

1. **Define the objective**: Identify what you need from the model, such as generating a description of a video segment or answering a question based on video content.
2. **Craft the initial prompt**: Based on your objective, develop the initial version of your prompt. Include all necessary details and context, and specify the expected output format.
3. **Test and iterate**: Analyze the output and refine your prompt based on the results. This step may involve several iterations.

# Tips for writing better prompts

Crafting the perfect prompt is not achieved through a universal solution, as the effectiveness of a specific method can vary widely depending on the task at hand. However, the tips provided in this section can help enhance your prompt-writing skills. By experimenting with them, you can discover approaches that lead to more accurate and relevant responses.

## Provide examples

Examples guide the model in generating the expected output, reducing ambiguity, and ensuring the platform generates relevant responses. The following example creates a police report based on surveillance footage. It includes an example of a similar report to guide the model's response.

**`Prompt`**

Date: 06/20/2022
Location: [Insert Location Here]
Witnesser’s full name: [Insert Witness Name Here]
Reporter: [Insert Reporter Name Here]
On 06/20/2022 around [Insert Time Here], I observed a suspect approaching a white gate located at the entrance of a residential property. The individual was wearing a blue hoodie, dark pants, and a face mask, which obscured their facial features. The suspect opened the gate and proceeded onto a wooden deck, where they picked up a cardboard box situated near the gate’s edge. After securing the box, the suspect closed the gate behind them and exited the property, walking away with the item. The behavior exhibited was inconsistent with typical pedestrian activity in the area, and the deliberate concealment of identity raises concerns about the legitimacy of the action. The box’s contents and ownership remain unknown. Given the suspicious nature of the incident, further investigation is recommended to determine the suspect’s intent and the origin of the box.
```
## Provide context
Providing context in prompts helps the platform understand your requirements, ensuring the generated response is accurately tailored to your needs. By providing context, you reduce the chances of irrelevant outputs. The following example provides the required context to customize the generated response according to your needs.
**`Prompt`**
```markdown title="Prompt" showLineNumbers={false} wordWrap maxLines=5

Good evening, viewers. Tonight’s FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash between France and Morocco delivered one of the most electrifying matches of the tournament, culminating in a 2-0 victory for the defending champions, France.

From the opening whistle, the intensity was palpable. The French team, wearing their iconic blue jerseys, came out with purpose, pressing high and dominating possession. At 00:08, Kylian Mbappé unleashed a powerful shot, only to be met by a swift intervention from Morocco’s goalkeeper, Hernandez. But France refused to relent. By 00:18, they had seized control, with Unai’s tactical precision setting the tone.

The breakthrough came in dramatic fashion. At 00:28, Olivier Giroud found himself in a one-on-one situation with Saïs, drawing a crucial save from the Moroccan keeper. Moments later, at 00:43, Mbappé exploded down the flank, dancing past defenders with his trademark speed and agility. His run culminated in a thunderous effort that was brilliantly cleared off the post by El Yameek, the Moroccan centre-back, in an acrobatic save that left fans in awe.

Despite Morocco’s resilience, France continued to press. At 00:54, another chance arose—Enesiri danced through the box, but Dari failed to connect on the near post. The tension mounted as both teams pushed for a decisive goal.

Then, at 01:17, the moment arrived. Mbappé, with his dazzling footwork, broke through the Moroccan defense once more. The crowd roared as he advanced, and though Hamdala couldn’t convert the final chance, the damage was done. France had already secured their lead.

The final minutes were a testament to France’s composure. At 01:31, Kolo Mawani entered the game, injecting fresh energy. The French team, now fully in control, maintained their discipline and defensive solidity. By 01:52, the final whistle blew: France 2, Morocco 0.

The victory sends France into the semi-finals, where they will face their next challenge with confidence and momentum. Morocco, though defeated, earned admiration for their grit and attacking flair. This was a match of passion, precision, and unforgettable moments—one that will be remembered for years to come.

## Choose the type of prompt

Based on your requirements, differentiate between question-answering and description-based prompts, as each will guide the model's focus differently. The example prompt below is phrased as a question and instructs the model to list the filming techniques used in a video.

**`Prompt`**

```markdown title="Prompt" showLineNumbers={false} wordWrap maxLines=5
What kind of filming techniques were used in this video?
```

**`Output`**

```markdown title="Output" showLineNumbers={false} wordWrap maxLines=5
The video employs a dynamic and visually intense mix of filming techniques to heighten tension and immerse the viewer in the chaotic scene. Close-up shots are used strategically to capture emotional expressions, such as the intense eye contact between the two central figures at the beginning (00:00–00:03) and the focused gaze of the man wearing goggles (00:48–00:53). Wide-angle and high-angle shots establish the spatial context, particularly in the kitchen setting, showing the positioning of police officers and the men in the foreground (00:18–00:22). Low-angle shots are employed to emphasize power and dominance, especially when framing the man with goggles (00:48–00:53).
Slow motion is used to dramatize key moments, such as the precise moment the man with goggles catches food (00:48–00:53) and the impact of flying debris on the police officers (00:53–01:00). Quick cuts between action sequences—such as gunshots and reactions—create a sense of urgency and disorientation (00:36–00:48). Dynamic camera movements follow the rapid motion of objects and characters, enhancing the feeling of unpredictability and chaos (00:28–00:36). Special effects, including shattered glass and airborne debris, are seamlessly integrated to amplify the intensity of the action. Together, these techniques craft a visually gripping and emotionally charged sequence that underscores the conflict and emotional stakes of the moment.
Subject: Key Photography Tips from "The Photo Cookbook" – Master Portraits, Lighting, and Composition
Dear [Recipient's Name],
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share a concise summary of the key takeaways from a recent photography tutorial by professional photographer Tim Shields, which offers actionable insights for both beginners and experienced photographers.
The core message centers around using a “recipe” approach to photography—just as chefs follow step-by-step instructions to create perfect dishes, photographers can use proven techniques to consistently produce sharp, well-composed, and visually compelling images.
**1. Portrait Composition Using the Rule of Thirds:**
Place your subject along one of the vertical third lines (left or right) and ensure their face aligns with the top third line—ideally at an intersection of the grid lines. Avoid centering the face unless the background is simple and symmetrical. For added depth, position key background elements (like a distant stone house in a lavender field) on the opposite third line.
**2. Avoid Distractions in the Background:**
Never let trees, poles, or other elements protrude from behind your subject’s head. This breaks visual flow and distracts from the main subject.
**3. Achieve Professional-Looking Blurred Backgrounds (Bokeh):**
Use portrait mode on smartphones or set your camera to aperture priority (A/Av mode). Choose the smallest f-stop number available (e.g., f/2.8) and zoom in to maximum focal length. Focus precisely on your subject’s face—this will naturally blur the background and elevate your image quality.
**4. Master Lighting for Better Results:**
Avoid backlit shots (e.g., facing a sunset), as they create silhouettes. Instead, position your subject so light falls directly on their face. Use natural light diffused through a white bed sheet over a window, or use artificial lighting: a bright “key light” on camera and a softer “fill light” to reduce shadows.
**5. Use the Photo Cookbook for Step-by-Step Guidance:**
Tim Shields’ *The Photo Cookbook* provides 30 practical recipes covering depth of field, aperture, ISO, shutter speed, and eight essential composition techniques—including leading lines, symmetry, foreground interest, and stacking rules. The book also includes a detailed cheat sheet for camera settings and online resources for further learning.
Whether you're aiming to win photo contests, grow your social media presence, or simply take photos you’re proud of, following these structured, proven methods can transform your results—regardless of your camera gear.
## Choose the language for the output
Specify if you want the output in a different language. The following example summarizes a video, indicating that the response should be in Spanish.
**`Prompt`**
```markdown title="Prompt" showLineNumbers={false} wordWrap maxLines=5
Write a summary in Spanish.
```
**`Output`**
```markdown title="Output" showLineNumbers={false} wordWrap maxLines=5
```
## Be concise
Being concise helps the model focus on the essential information. This speeds up processing and increases the likelihood of generating precise, relevant responses.
## Tune the temperature
Tuning the temperature controls the randomness of the text output. A lower temperature results in more deterministic results, which is ideal for tasks requiring high accuracy and specificity. In contrast, a higher temperature produces more creative text, which is suitable for brainstorming or creative writing tasks. Experiment with this setting to find the optimal balance that meets your objectives. For details, see the [Tune the temperature](/v1.3/docs/guides/analyze-videos/tune-the-temperature) page.
The macaroni and cheese recipe featured in the video includes the following ingredients: 8 ounces of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese (half reserved for topping), 5 ounces of sharp cheddar cheese, 4 ounces of Gruyère cheese, 3 ounces of fresh mozzarella cheese, 4 ounces of cooked ham (julienned), 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter, 5 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, 4.5 cups of whole milk, 2 teaspoons of mustard powder, 2 teaspoons of cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, salt (for boiling pasta), and breadcrumbs for topping.
To prepare the dish: Begin by grating the Parmigiano-Reggiano, cheddar, and Gruyère cheeses, and cubing the mozzarella. Dice the ham. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook elbow macaroni until al dente, then drain and set aside. In the same pot, melt butter over medium-high heat until it foams and subsides. Whisk in flour to form a roux, cooking for about two minutes until golden brown. Gradually whisk in milk, bringing the mixture to a boil while scraping the pan’s bottom to prevent sticking. Reduce heat and simmer until the sauce thickens to the consistency of heavy cream. Stir in mustard powder, cayenne pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Add the diced ham and half of the grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. Fold in the cooked macaroni, then stir in the remaining cheeses—cheddar, Gruyère, and mozzarella—until fully melted and smooth. Transfer the mixture to a glass or ceramic baking dish, top with the remaining Parmigiano-Reggiano and breadcrumbs, and bake at 375°F for 15 to 20 minutes until the top is golden brown and the center is bubbling. Serve hot, or refrigerate and reheat as needed.
**Recipe: Three-Cheese Baked Macaroni and Cheese (Inspired by Anthony Bourdain’s Appetites)**
*Yields: 6–8 servings*
*Prep time: 30 minutes | Cook time: 45 minutes | Total time: 1 hour 15 minutes*
---
### **Ingredients**
- **8 ounces (225g) Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese**, freshly grated (half reserved for topping)
- **5 ounces (140g) sharp cheddar cheese**, freshly shredded
- **4 ounces (115g) Gruyère cheese**, freshly grated
- **3 ounces (85g) fresh mozzarella cheese**, cubed
- **4 ounces (115g) cooked ham**, julienned or diced
- **5 tablespoons (70g) unsalted butter**
- **5 tablespoons (60g) all-purpose flour**
- **4.5 cups (1.1 liters) whole milk**
- **2 teaspoons mustard powder**
- **2 teaspoons cayenne pepper**
- **1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce**
- **Salt**, to taste (add to boiling water)
- **12 ounces (340g) elbow macaroni**
- **Breadcrumbs (optional)**, for topping (if desired)
---
### **Instructions**
1. **Preheat oven** to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a glass or ceramic baking dish (approximately 9x13 inches) or use a non-stick dish.
2. **Prepare the cheeses**:
   - Grate 8 ounces of Parmigiano-Reggiano using a box grater or food processor. Set aside half (4 ounces) for topping.
   - Shred 5 ounces of sharp cheddar cheese.
   - Grate 4 ounces of Gruyère cheese.
   - Cube 3 ounces of fresh mozzarella.
   - Dice 4 ounces of cooked ham.
3. **Cook the macaroni**:
   - In a large heavy-bottomed pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil. Add 1 tablespoon of salt.
   - Add 12 ounces of elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until *al dente* (typically 7–9 minutes).
   - Drain the pasta and rinse under cold water to stop cooking. Set aside.
4. **Make the cheese sauce**:
   - In the same pot (still hot), melt 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium-high heat until it foams and subsides.
   - Whisk in 5 tablespoons of all-purpose flour. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns a nutty golden brown (do not let it scorch).
   - Gradually pour in 4.5 cups of whole milk while whisking continuously. Bring to a boil, scraping the bottom and sides of the pan to prevent lumps.
   - Reduce heat to a simmer and continue stirring for 5–7 minutes until the sauce thickens to the consistency of heavy cream.
   - Whisk in 2 teaspoons mustard powder, 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper, and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce.
   - Stir in the diced ham and mix well.
   - Add half of the grated Parmigiano-Reggiano (4 ounces), the shredded cheddar, Gruyère, and mozzarella. Stir until all cheeses are fully melted and the sauce is smooth and creamy.
5. **Combine pasta and sauce**:
   - Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce. Stir well with a wooden spoon until fully coated and evenly mixed. The mixture should be rich, creamy, and cohesive.
6. **Transfer to baking dish**:
   - Carefully pour the macaroni and cheese mixture into the prepared glass or ceramic baking dish.
   - Sprinkle the remaining 4 ounces of grated Parmigiano-Reggiano evenly over the top.
   - (Optional) Sprinkle a light layer of breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
7. **Bake**:
   - Place in the preheated oven and bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling slightly around the edges.
8. **Serve**:
   - Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes.
   - Serve hot, either immediately or refrigerate and reheat gently (in portions or whole) the next day—this dish tastes even better the following day.
**Recipe: Anthony Bourdain-Style Baked Macaroni and Cheese**
*From the video "Cooking Bourdain" – Episode featuring a rich, cheesy, and deeply flavorful macaroni and cheese recipe inspired by Bourdain’s cookbook *Appetites*.*
---
**Ingredients:**
- 12 ounces elbow macaroni
- 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 4.5 cups whole milk
- 2 teaspoons mustard powder
- 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 8 ounces Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, grated (divided: 4 oz for sauce, 4 oz for topping)
- 5 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 4 ounces Gruyère cheese, grated
- 3 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, cubed
- 4 ounces cooked ham, julienned or diced
- Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
- Nutmeg (a pinch, optional)
---
**Instructions:**
1. **Preheat oven** to 375°F (190°C). Prepare a glass or ceramic baking dish for the final dish.
2. **Cook the pasta:** In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until *just al dente*—avoid overcooking to prevent mushiness. Drain and set aside.
3. **Prepare the cheese base:** While the pasta cooks, begin building the sauce. In the same pot (still hot), melt the 5 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat until it foams and subsides.
4. **Make the roux:** Whisk in the 5 tablespoons of flour and cook, stirring constantly, for about 2 minutes until the mixture turns a nutty golden brown. Do not let it scorch.
5. **Build the béchamel:** Gradually pour in the 4.5 cups of whole milk while whisking continuously. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring with a wooden spoon and scraping the bottom and sides of the pot to prevent lumps.
6. **Thicken the sauce:** Reduce heat to a simmer and continue stirring until the sauce reaches a consistency slightly thicker than heavy cream—about 5–7 minutes.
7. **Season the sauce:** Stir in the mustard powder, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, a pinch of nutmeg, and freshly ground black pepper. Then, fold in the diced ham, ensuring it’s evenly distributed.
8. **Add the cheeses:** Gradually stir in the grated Parmigiano-Reggiano (4 oz), sharp cheddar, Gruyère, and cubed mozzarella. Continue stirring until all cheeses are fully melted and the sauce is smooth and velvety.
9. **Combine with pasta:** Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon until every noodle is evenly coated.
10. **Transfer to baking dish:** Carefully pour the mixture into the prepared glass or ceramic baking dish.
11. **Top and bake:** Sprinkle the remaining 4 ounces of grated Parmigiano-Reggiano evenly over the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the dish is bubbling slightly around the edges.
12. **Serve:** Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Serve hot. The dish is also excellent the next day—reheat gently in the oven or microwave.
---
**Tips & Techniques from the Video:**
- **Cheese is king:** As the host notes, “Cheese is one of them” — the things in life you can rarely have too much of. Don’t be shy with the cheese; it’s macaroni and cheese, after all.
- **Use both utensils:** Switch between a whisk and a wooden spoon when making the roux and béchamel to ensure smooth, lump-free sauce.
- **Don’t rush the roux:** Cook the flour-butter mixture until it turns a nutty golden brown—this adds depth and richness.
- **Scrape the pan:** Always scrape the bottom and sides of the pot during cooking to prevent flour or milk from sticking and burning.
- **Ham adds flavor:** Use cooked ham for a savory, meaty depth. Julienned or diced works well.
- **Avoid truffle oil:** As the host humorously warns, “Truffles do not make it better. If you add truffle oil, which is made from a petroleum-based chemical additive and the crushed dreams of 90s culinary mediocrity, you should be punched in the kidneys.”
- **Reheating:** The dish reheats beautifully—just gently warm it in the oven or microwave to preserve texture.
